What Is a Bakru?

A Bakru (also spelled Bakroe or Bakulu) is a spiritual entity or spirit in the Winti religion, which is mainly practiced in Suriname and among Afro-Surinamese communities. The Bakru is often associated with magic, protection, and material gain, but also with danger if not treated properly.

In Winti tradition, a Bakru is:

  • A small spirit or entity, sometimes believed to originate from the soul of a deceased child, or artificially "created" by a wisiman (a spiritual practitioner or healer).

  • A servant spirit: people "own" it (or believe they do) to help with money, protection, power, or influence.

  • Often attached to a physical object, like a doll, bottle, or charm, which acts as its home.

  • Must be fed and respected regularly — for example, with food, drink, or other offerings.
